On the meadows near the Gothic tower in Janko Kráľ Park, we’ll once again spread out our blankets, unpack our picnic baskets, and bring to life stories from a time when life moved at a slower pace. We’ll transport ourselves to the period between 1900 and 1950, to a world of elegance, music, dance, and outdoor gatherings—an offline world with books, notebooks, and spontaneous conversations. Bring a hat, gloves, suspenders, a vest, a dress from your grandmother, or any clothing or accessory inspired by First Republic-era fashion. Even a small detail can transport you back a few decades and help create the event’s unique atmosphere. And what kind of picnic would it be without good food and drinks? You can look forward to: • wines from Kollar Winery • freshly prepared Cisár langos • traditional Leberkäse • crispy pastries from Cisár’s baker • homemade lemonades from Limča Bar • coffee from Mr. Králiček The afternoon program will also feature accompanying activities for young and old alike. You can test your strategic skills at the Račianska Chess Academy or with the popular game of Cornhole. You’ll also get a glimpse into the world of traditional crafts through a presentation of bobbin lace-making combined with a mini-workshop. Creative souls will enjoy an outdoor art workshop led by Marek Baranec or Mgr. art. Zuzana Svatik. On Friday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m., the top-notch FATS JAZZ BAND, led by Ladislav Fančovič, will perform an Evening by the Danube in the rhythm of hot jazz and swing. The event will take place in the beautiful garden of the Albrecht House in the heart of Bratislava, whose genius loci evokes the romantic times of the last century, when the Albrecht family welcomed artists and lovers of fine music with their doors always open. “An Evening by the Danube” is named after the beautiful song by Gejza Dusík from 1953, recorded by Viera Racková with Juraj Berczeller’s orchestra. The best pieces from the orchestra's repertoire will be played, as well as tangos and foxtrots from our, then still Czechoslovakian waters. You will be able to hear live the compositions played and sung by legends such as Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, F. Authentic hot jazz and swing music that will transport you to another world, get your blood pumping, and take you back to an era of sophistication, elegant gowns, and lively parties. The FATS JAZZ BAND is a nine-piece orchestra that revives the tradition of hot jazz and swing from the 1920s to the 1940s. It was founded by Ladislav Fančovič, one of the best contemporary Slovak pianists. The orchestra plays original arrangements of jazz legends such as Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Teddy Wilson, and Peggy Lee, which Fančovič faithfully transcribes from old shellac recordings. In addition to American hits, it also performs Slovak foxtrots and tangos by František Krištof Veselý, as well as Czech film melodies by Inka Zemánková and R. A. Dvorský. The reconstructed historical musical instruments, period costumes, and the orchestra’s overall presentation are in perfect harmony with the era they represent. Despite its, one might say, old-fashioned nature, the orchestra’s sound evokes something timeless in people. The orchestra performs old-time songs, bringing them into the present through its spontaneous interpretation. It is precisely this spontaneity that gave the music of that era its charm, and the Fats Jazz Band will undoubtedly bring that charm to life for you.
